Our ministrations to this apartment were calculated to instill a sense of depth, soul, and a little sex appeal in a decidedly unremarkable, unsexy space that had not been renovated since the building was erected in the 1960s. As a spirit guide for the renovation, our client proffered the names of Tom Ford and Halston, two titans of fashion renowned for their ultra-chic, refined, and occasionally louche sensibilities. The idea was to create a kind of richly detailed, sophisticated cocoon, a cloistered refuge from the tumult of the city, conducive to inspired living and gracious entertaining.
To establish an immediate sense of place and a suggestion of history, we installed a floor of reclaimed, stained oak planks laid in a chevron pattern, reminiscent of a Parisian hôtel particulier. The walls are painted in threes shades of gray, while the new architectural blocks that organize and define the apartment’s various rooms are coated in a black lacquer that reflects the twinkling lights and views of the city. Black lacquer reappears on the kitchen cabinets, accompanied by a kitchen counter and backsplash of highly figured Kenya Black marble. In the primary and guest baths, Equator Marmara, a marble with a more regular, striped pattern, expands the palette of tailored, sensuous materials and surface treatments. The overall effect is one of cosmopolitan, masculine glamour, a tribute to the enduring allure of the city that never sleeps.
